The many forms of the Handplane

My five favorite forms of handplanes...

First, the Brownfish... the board that I have been trying to mimic since I started shaping. Gary makes the best handplanes, in my opinion. His boards stand out with their neoprene straps, pads on the deck, shapes and concaves, and overall awesomeness.

Next, the Hess handplane. Danny Hess has been shaping for a long time and has amazing wood-working skills. His simple boards have a hole instead of a strap and are beautiful.

The Enjoy handplane. Colorful, made out of surfboard materials, some have fins and GoPro mounts... overall they are cool handplanes.

The original? The Handgun... I would love to have one just for the fun of it.

The DIY. This is where it all started for most of the prominent shapers today. The do-it-yourself scene is growing today, which is a great thing. I encourage everyone to start making their own equipment because the feeling that comes out of riding something you made can turn a mediocre wave into something incredible. I should warn you though, it is addicting and just might takeover all of your life. If you ever have questions or would like some advice, just shoot me an email and I will share what I have learned with you.

Oh, and don't forget the other kind of handplane... Little Logs.

  1. Hey great to see the reference to the home made handplane.

    I've just finished this:

    and previously did this:

I gave the second one away but have since developed a real interest in body surfing so the newie is going nowhere but in the tube with me in tow!

    Cheers
